A Lapband & Gastric Sleeve Teen
For me, ever since I could recall, before kindergarten, I had always been overweight, obese. During elementary I had always gotten teased for this, so I started exercise classes, the “fat pill” but none of that ever seemed to work. In junior high, I started to use the fat pill, it took me a year in a half to lose fifty pounds, the time when I was at my peak of 250 pounds. By the time I had lost fifty pounds I started to have health problems, such as heart pain, then I quit the pill. Before I knew it, I gained all the weight back with an additional 12 more pounds. I learned when entering high school things would only get worse. Freshman year I was one of the fattest teens of my class of more than 500. It was really easy to notice me. Sophomore year it was still the same, until I heard about the lap band, right before Christmas. I thought about it, I prayed about it, then I told my mother. My Mother seemed very opened minded about it, my Dad was scared, he would always tell me how I should be skinny not fat, but when I told him he couldn’t believe it, he realized how bad my life was. I was about 50% body fat. Then before I knew it, we found a clinic, Jerusalem Hospital, a place very well known, a place that would be willing to operate on me, give me a second chance.
My journey of a new life began, when we arrived to the Jet Blue terminal in San Diego at 7 am. , we were waiting, and then we met another family that was going with us, with a teen around my age, and then my nerves began to go down. We arrived to the hospital around 8:30, and when we arrived, we were introduced to the doctors, then were off to the lab to blood work, to assure that everything would go well. We then returned to the hospital, and before I knew it, I was off to surgery. After the surgery, when I awoke, I was sore, then the driver drove us to the recovery house. The recovery house felt more like a vacation house, the employees very hospitable and cheerful, and very courteous. After a few hours, we went to the mall, so I could go walking. Walking was the painful part, get the gas out. After the walking I was feeling better, getting back to normal. After a few days at the recovery home, I was back on my way to home sweet home.
After the surgery I began to lose weight immediately. In two weeks, I lost fifteen pounds. Before I knew it, I was losing weight like crazy. In three months I had lost more than thirty pounds. I was unfortunately one of the unfortunate 25% and had an allergic reaction to the lap band. The hospital was contacted & they immediately admitted me upon arrival. I had the band removed and the gastric sleeve done. One reason I prefer the sleeve over the band is that the sleeve doesn’t require fills to be done. Ever since coming to the Jerusalem Hospital, I’ve lost over fifty pounds in half a year, when with the pill it would have taken me over a year. |
