Intra Gastric Procedure
THE (BIB®) SYSTEM IS A NON-SURGICAL SHORT-TERM TREATMENT ALTERNATIVE

The BioEnterics® Intragastric Balloon (BIB®) System is a non-surgical, non-pharmaceutical alternative for the treatment of obesity. The BIB® System is designed to provide short-term weight loss therapy to reduce health risks related to obesity or risks prior to vital surgery, or as part of a supervised weight loss program.

Endoscopically placed and inflated with saline, the BIB® System balloon (made of durable, elastic, high-quality silicone) partially fills the stomach to induce the feeling of fullness and support patients in reducing food intake and adopting new dietary habits. It is used in conjunction with a supervised diet and behavior modification program to help maintain weight loss over time after removal of the device, which can also be done endoscopically.

Advantages
The primary advantage of the gastric balloon is the lower BMI requirement. It can be used as a tool to loose a stubborn 30-40 pounds. In addition, it is temporary, and no cutting or real surgery is involved.

Disadvantages
This is not a permanent solution. This is not a magic pill, but similar to a lap band - something that makes your stomach a bit uncomfortable if you eat too much to help you stick to a diet plan. Studies have shown you will not loose a significant amount of weight with the balloon alone and not dieting and exercise program.

Once the balloon comes out, you will have to maintain your diet and weight loss on your own.

Side Effects
There will be some cramping, nusea, vomiting and discomfort immediately following placement of the balloon. After a few days to a week the body should become adjusted to the balloon's presence and the only side effect should be stomach fullness.

Risks
Most risks associated with this procedure are the normals ones associated with any procedure that involves anesthesia, endoscopes, etc.

There is an extremely small risk of deflation and stomach/intestinal obstruction but with proper follow up care with the physician this would be even further reduced.
