About Obesity
OBESITY IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM, GROWING AT AN ALARMING RATE WORLDWIDE

Obesity is defined as the condition of being very overweight and having a body mass index, or BMI, of 30 or higher. The BMI is a measure of your weight relative to your height.

Your waist size is also important. It is a measure of your abdominal fat. Your health risks increase as your BMI and waist size get larger. A waist measurement greater than 40 inches for men or 35 inches for women indicates a significant increase in health risk.

You can find your BMI by using our BMI calculator.

Obesity is determined by measurement of body fat, not merely body weight. People might be over the weight limit for normal standards, but if they are very muscular with low body fat, they are not obese.

Others might be normal or underweight, but still have excessive body fat. Different measurements and factors are used to determine whether or not a person is overweight to the degree that it threatens health

  • Body mass index ( BMI ) (a measure of body fat).
  • Waist circumference.
  • Waist-hip ratio.
  • Anthropometry.
  • The presence or absence of other disease risk factors (e.g., smoking, high blood pressure, unhealthy cholesterol levels, diabetes, relatives with heart disease) in addition to obesity. (Such risk factors plus BMI may be the most important components in determining health risks with weight.)
Surgery solutions
Because of this global epidemic, there are now surgical procedures available that can help people lose unwanted and unhealthy excess weight.

One of these procedures is the Mini gastric bypass.

In modern medicine, surgeons and specialists consider this operation the benchmark for excellence. The surgery is successful because of its scientific ingenuity. During the operation, a very small stomach is created, from which the remainder of the stomach is divided and separated. The small intestine is then surgically attached to the new stomach, allowing the lower stomach to now be bypassed. If other methods for losing weight have proven unsuccessful, then weight loss surgery through a Mini Gastric Bypass is something to consider.

What are the risks of obesity ?
Nearly one third of adults are obese. Obesity increases as people age. It is a serious condition because it increases your risk of poor health and major illness, such as:

  • high blood pressure
  • breathing problems
  • stroke
  • heart disease
  • diabetes
  • hyperlipidemia, or increased fats in the body, often associated with higher cholesterol levels
    * gallbladder disease
  • gout
  • some types of cancer
  • osteoarthritis (stiffness and soreness of joints,
especially the knees, that may occur with aging).
